Es reitet schweigend und allein Der alte Graf zum Wald hinein. Er reitet über Stein und Dorn, Zur Seiten schlendert Schwert und Horn. Und immer düstrer wird die Bahn, Wie raget Fels an Fels hinan. Zu einer Mühle kommt er da, Doch ist kein Leben fern und nah. Zerfallen sind die Gänge all, Kein Mühlrad treibt der Wasser Schwall. Durch's offne Dach der Himmel schaut, Getrümmer rings und Wucherkraut. Nur eine Bank erblickt er drin, Drauf setzt der düstre Gast sich hin. Verschränkt die Arme auf der Brust, Und schließt das Auge unbewußt. Da wird's lebendig um ihn her; Die Werke poltern dumpf und schwer. Das Wasser braust, es lebt der Hain, Das Mühlrad klappert lustig drein. Und sieh, mit Säcken ein und aus Kommt Knecht um Knecht durch Saus und Braus. Vom Mühlgang, erst noch leer und wüst, Der Müller freundlich nieder grüßt. Jetzt fliegt den Steig herab im Sprung, Sein Töchterlein, gar frisch und jung. Das Antlitz wie der Himmel klar, In Flechten tanzt ihr schönes Haar. Das nah't dem Grafen und kredenzt Das Glas, d'rinn flüss'ges Gold erglänzt. Wohl fühlt da, wie in alter Zeit, Sein Herz der Liebe Seligkeit. Und auf das Kind den Blick gewandt, Hinstreckt er nach dem Glas die Hand. Doch wie nach ihm er greift mit Hast Da ist's nur Luft, was er erfaßt. Verschwunden ist so Glas als Wein, Der Müller und sein Töchterlein. Kein Mühlrad geht, kein Wasser braust, Der Wind nur durch's Gebälke saust. Und wieder auf den Rappen dort Wirft sich der Graf und reitet fort. Er reitet stumm den Wald entlang, Und streift ein Thränlein von der Wang'.

Cavalca silenzioso e solo il vecchio Conte nel bosco. Cavalca su sassi e spine, ai fianchi gli pendono spada e corno. E sempre più aspro diventa il cammino, come incontra rocce su rocce. A un mulino giunge infine, ma non c'è segno di vita. Tutti i sentieri sono scomparsi, l'acqua non muove nessuna ruota. Dal tetto aperto si mostra il cielo, intorno macerie ed erbacce. Solo una panca egli vede dentro, su quella si siede l'ospite stanco, incrocia le braccia sul petto e chiude gli occhi senza accorgersene. E tutto prende vita intorno a lui, i lavori fervono con rumore forte e cupo. L'acqua scorre, vive l'aia, la ruota risuona allegra. E guarda, coi sacchi vanno e vengono garzoni, uno dopo l'altro, con vivace rumore, dal sentiero, prima vuoto e deserto, il mugnaio saluta con un cortese inchino. Ora scende la scala a salti la sua figliola, così fresca e giovane, il viso luminoso come il cielo, in trecce danza la sua bella chioma. Lei si avvicina al Conte e gli offre il bicchiere, in cui splende oro liquido. Lui sente proprio come ai vecchi tempi in cuore la gioia dell'amore. E volge lo sguardo alla fanciulla, stendendo la mano verso il bicchiere. Ma, appena sta per afferrarlo in fretta, è solo aria quello che stringe. E' scopmparso il bicchiere ed il vino, il mugnaio e la sua figliola. Non gira la ruota, non risuona l'acqua, solo il vento sibila attraverso le travi. E di nuovo a cavallo si mette il Conte, e se ne va. Cavalca muto per il bosco e si asciuga una lacrima dalla guancia.
