Wanneer mijn krekels sjirpen, Bij nacht, als laat nog brandt de haard, Dan zit ik met de beste zin En kijk tevree de vlammen in, Zo licht, zo onbezwaard. Een heerlijk, rustig uurtje Blijft men nog graag bij 't haardvuur op; Men pookt, wanneer de vlam wat zinkt, De sintels op en peinst en denkt: Het zit er al weer op! Wat goeds en wat voor kwaads ook De dag voor ons heeft meegebracht, Passeert nog eenmaal de revue; Alleen het kwade schrapt men nu, Want dat verstoort de nacht. Om lekker te gaan te dromen Bereidt men zich dan kalmpjes voor; Als zorgeloos een lieflijk beeld Met zoet genot de ziel bespeelt, Draait men zich op één oor. Wat voel ik mij toch thuis hier In deze stille land'lijkheid! Wat in 't rumoer van galm en goud, Het dwaze hart gevangen houdt, Geeft geen tevredenheid.
