Im Grase
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Wie sich's so wohl im Grase liegt
Bei Kraut und Blumendüften,
[Wenn über uns ein]1 Vogel fliegt
In goldnen Himmelslüften.
Da kann man wahrlich denken nicht,
Daß man bald liegen werde
Tief unten ohne Sang und Licht
Bei Wurzeln in der Erde.
Man denkt nur an des Himmels Schein
Und an den Vogel drinnen,
Denkt: Gott wird wohl so gnädig sein,
Daß wir auch das gewinnen.

In the grass
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
How well one feels lying in the grass
Among the scents of herbs and flowers,
[When]1 above us a bird flies
In the golden breezes of the heavens.
There one can truly not think
That one soon shall lie
Deep down below without song and light
Among the roots of the earth.
One thinks only of the glow of the heavens
And of the bird in it,
Thinks: God shall surely be so merciful
That we, too, shall achieve that.
