La Peri: Que feliços passegen els benaurats esperits en la flaire de les flors que mai es marceixen! Tot i que siguin meus els jardins de la terra i el mar i jo mateixa culli flors entre les estrelles: una petita flor del cel és més formosa que totes les altres! El llac de Catxemira resplendeix també, assolellat i pur, amb l’esclat de les illes de plàtans, i allà hi corren els rius damunt la sorra daurada, però ai! Només els benaurats ho coneixen: una gota del cel és més formosa que totes les altres! Ves, vola amb les teves ales d’una estrella a l’altre, d’un món a un altre més lluminós, tan lluny com el cel estén la volta de l’estança del sol, pren tots els delits de totes les esferes i fes que durin un temps infinit: una hora del cel és més formosa que totes les altres!

És ella, i a la llum de la lluna ell veu com, radiant, s’acosta la promesa fidel. Und horch, von Himmelsbäumen ruft Kristallner Glöckchen Klang, sie lauscht Dem Läuten in ambrosischer Luft, Die her von Allahs Throne rauscht; Sie sieht die Sternenschalen blinken, Rings um den See des Lichts gereiht, Wo die verklärten Seelen trinken Den ersten Trank der Herrlichkeit. Tenor solo: Sentint de lluny el cant, la Peri es llança més amunt; ella porta el sospir de l’amor més pur com present a la porta de l’Edèn. Batega fort el seu cor, l’esperança diu: aviat s’atansarà a les palmeres de l’Edèn, car somrient, l’esperit de la llum acceptarà aquest present a la porta. I escolteu, dels arbres celestials crida un cristal•lí ressò de campanes, ella sent el repicar en l’aire perfumat d’ambrosia que remoreja des del tron d’Al•là; ella veu resplendir la volta d’estrelles, arrenglerades al voltant del llac de la llum, on les ànimes transfigurades beuen el primer glop de la glòria divina. Però debades fou l’esperança de la Peri, la porta eterna roman tancada i l’àngel diu amb afligit esguard: L’àngel: No encara! Fidel ha estat la donzella i la seva història restarà escrita damunt el cap del Senyor i, de grat, serà llegida mantes vegades per els serafins, però, Peri, per a tu la porta de l’Edèn resta tancada: molt més sagrat ha de ser el present que et deixi entrar per la porta!

Un amulet, on damunt la seva pedra hi brilla un senyal imprès per un llamp, allà veig també un full en el que, autèntic, llueix el segell de Salomó; potser em desxifraran on, damunt la terra, o en el mar, rau el poder màgic, el noble do, que obre la porta de l’Edèn als pecadors, potser els meus ulls podran llegir-lo, avall! Tenor solo: Ella davalla amb joiosa esperança, benignes, els ulls del cel encara somriuen, el fullam daurat per la llum del capvespre resta encara obert a ponent. I adés, volant damunt la vall de Baalbek, veu un infant que està jugant, cantant enmig de roses silvestres, rosat de cara com elles mateixes. A prop del nen, que cansat de jugar reposa entre les flors, ella veu baixar d’un fogós cavall un home exhaust que ràpidament, en una font envoltada d’altes herbes, es vincla per beure, tot seguit, gira de pressa el seu rostre ferotge vers el formós infant, que seu sense temença, malgrat que encara mai, a la llum del sol, hagués vist un rostre tan salvatge com aquell, terriblement salvatge, com un horrible conjunt de núvols de tempesta, de nit i de foc, allà hi havia tots els vicis, es mostraven totes les vileses, perjuris, hostes assassinats, esposa traïda, que amb lletres de sang estaven escrits en aquell rostre. Mezzosoprano solo: Però escolteu com crida la pregària del vespre, mentre el sol davalla lentament des dels milers de minarets de Síria, vibrant a través de l’aire; l’infant s’aixeca del planter de flors que li havia servit de jaç, s’agenolla damunt el terra florit, i adés, amb llavis angelicals, pronuncia el nom etern de Déu, mentre que els seus ulls i les mans s’alcen vers el cel del capvespre, sembla un angelet que s’ha perdut aquí i vol tornar a casa. Tenor solo: I què sent l’home pecador que allà es recolza i es recorda ara de tots els anys de delictes i sang, que, en el llòbrec decurs de la seva vida, debades ha albirat el camí de la salvació, i que ningú mai li ha ofert un ramell d’olivera? L’home: Hi havia un temps, benaurat infant, que joves i pures, com tu, eren les meves obres, les meves pregàries, però ara!

La Peri: Cau una gota damunt la terra d’Egipte, abrusada per la calor de juny, avall, des de la lluna, d’un aital poder guaridor, que a l’instant el dimoni de la pesta desapareix i la salut torna a revifar el cel i la terra. Oh pecador, no et guareix aquest devessall de llàgrimes de penediment? Per més abrusants que hagin estat les ferides del cor una gota del cel les guareix totes! Tenor solo amb cor: I mireu, humilment s’agenolla allà en pregària l’home al costat de l’infant, mentre un raig de sol resplendeix damunt tots dos, el pecador i el pur. I himnes voleien per el cel, car una ànima ha estat perdonada! L’esfera daurada s’havia amagat i encara restaven de genolls, llavors cau el raig més pur i més bell que mai s’hagi vist del sol o de les estrelles, damunt aquella llàgrima. Himnes voleien per el cel, car una ànima ha estat perdonada! Per a uns ulls mortals seria com un meteor o l’aurora boreal, però la Peri ho sap ben bé: l’esclat deu ser el somriure de l’àngel, amb el que benignament acull la llàgrima que aviat li obrirà la porta del cel.
