Ein betrogen Mägdlein irrt im Walde,
Flieht den harten Tag und sucht das Dunkel,
Wirft auf eine Felsenbank sich nieder
Und beginnt zu weinen unersättlich.
In den wettermürben Stein des Felsens
Ist gegraben eine kleine Schale -
Da das Mägdlein sich erhebt zu wandern,
Bleibt die Schale voller bittrer Zähren.
Abends kommt ein Vöglein hergeflattert,
Aus gewohntem Becherlein zu trinken,
Wo sich ihm das Himmelswasser sammelt,
Schluckt und schüttelt sich und fliegt von hinnen.

Une jeune fille trompée erre dans la forêt,
Elle fuit le jour âpre et recherche l'obscurité,
Se jette sur un banc de pierre
Et se met à pleurer sans pouvoir s'arrêter.
Dans la pierre du rocher attendrie par le temps
Une petite coupe s'est creusée --
Quand la jeune fille se lève pour partir,
La coupe se trouve être emplie d'amers pleurs.
Au soir arrive en voletant un petit oiseau
Pour boire à son gobelet habituel,
Qui collecte pour lui l'eau du ciel,
Il boit, se secoue et s'envole de cet endroit.
