Als endlich sie den Sarg hier abgesetzt, Den Deckel hoben noch zu guter Letzt, In jenem Augenblick hab ich gesehn, Wie just die Sonne schied im Untergehn. Beleuchtet von dem abendroten Strahl Sah ich all die Gesichter noch einmal, Den Turmknopf oben in der goldnen Ruh - Es war ein Blitz, sie schlossen wieder zu. Ich sah auch zwischen Auf- und Niederschlag, Wie Märzenschnee rings auf den Gräbern lag; Das Wetter muß seither gebrochen sein, Denn feucht dringt es in diesen leichten Schrein. Ich hör ein Knistern, wie wenn sacht und leis Sich Schollen lösen von des Winters Eis; Ich ärmster Lenzfreund bin ja auch erwacht Und kann nicht regen mich in dunkler Nacht! Wie jeglich Samenkorn sich mächtig dehnt, Der junge Halm ans warme Licht sich sehnt, So reck ich den gefangnen, meinen Leib, Doch ist's ein fruchtlos grimmer Zeitvertreib! Hört man nicht klopfen laut da obenwärts Hier mein zum Blühen so bereites Herz? Sie wissen nicht, wie es da unten tut, Und keine Wünschelrute zeigt dies Blut! Käm auch geschlichen so von ungefähr Ein alter Schatz- und Quellengräber her, Sein Stäblein, nur auf Geld und Gut gericht, Es spürt' das warme rote Brünnlein nicht.

Quand finalement ils ont déposé là le cercueil Et pour la toute dernière fois ouvert le couvercle, À cet instant j'ai vu Que le soleil allait se coucher. Éclairés par les rayons rouges du soir Je vis encore une fois tous les visages, Le bulbe du clocher la-haut dans le calme doré - Juste un éclair et ils refermèrent. Entre ouverture et fermeture, je vis aussi La neige de mars qui entourait la tombe ; Depuis lors le temps a dû se détériorer Car l'humidité filtre dans ce léger coffre. J'entends un craquement, comme lorsque la terre Se libère lentement et doucement de la glace d'hiver ; Aussi, moi le plus malheureux ami du printemps suis-je éveillé Et ne peux pas bouger dans cette nuit noire ! Comme toute semence se raidit avec force, Comme le jeune plant qui tend vers la chaude lumière, Moi, prisonnier, j'étire mon corps Mais c'est une cruelle et infructueuse perte de temps. N'entend-on pas palpiter fortement vers le haut Mon cœur si prêt à fleurir ici ? On ne sait pas ce qui se passe là-dessous, Et aucune baguette de sourcier n'indique ce sang.
