O frischer Morgen, frischer Mut, Wie will ich euer gedenken! Wer weiß, wird mir ein solches Gut Der Himmel nochmals schenken: Daheim die Meinen treu und lieb, In mir der rege Lebenstrieb, Und über mir die Sterne. Der Morgen löscht [sich langsam]1 aus, Er wirft mit Wind die Bäume; Ich tret' aus dunklem Jägerhaus, Verprustend die kurzen Träume. Es saugt der Mund die frische Luft, Die Brust schlingt herben Waldesduft, Es hofft das Herz, was weiß ich! Da gehn die großen Pläne auf In des Morgens düstrer Frische, Da wirft man Taten und Welten zu Hauf, Fährt grade und quer wie die Fische; Und wenn besorgt der Jäger fragt: Sie sind wohl schlimm und mißbehagt? Ach nein, ich bin nur munter! Und klarer, freier wird der Drang, Je mehr der Tag sich lichtet, Der [Wintervogel]2 versucht Gesang, 'S ist Alles so wohl gerichtet. Oh fresh morning, bright courage, How I shall remember you! Who knows if such a treasure Heaven will ever send me again. At home my loved ones faithful and dear, Within me a brisk life-instinct, And above me the stars! Morning extinguishes the stars, With wind it tosses the trees about; I step out from the dark hunting cabin Snorting away my fleeting dreams. My mouth sucks in the fresh air, My breast inhales the pungent scent of the forest, My heart hopes, I know not what! And clearer, freer becomes the urge The more the daylight dawns. The bird, too, attempts its song, Everything is so wisely ordered. Lord God, in your great house, How difficult it may be, how easy it looks, Accept thanks for the hunt and for breath!
