Nun gute Nacht, mein Kind, und schlaf...
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG

Good night now, my child, and sleep...
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
"Good night now, my child, and sleep until you are refreshed!"
The blood rose hot into my young cheeks.
He [my father] lightly stroked my burning face,
And from out of his dear, faithful eyes there broke
A proud beam of the brightest fatherly joy:
"Ah, are you tired, Father? ... I am not weary!"
I kiss him fervently, more fervently than usual,
And again a secret, quiet smile flits
Around his lips; then he leaves me alone.
The moon peers in through the curtains,
But I fold my hands dreamily:
"Dear God, how happy one can be!"
