You have seen spring, winter, summer; these things are forever. The sun itself goes down, and night extends its dominion. Do not seek to know where the sun comes from, or where water comes from, but strive to find out where you can buy myrrh and garlands. Pipe for me! I want to have three free-flowing fountains of honey, five of milk, ten of wine, twelve of myrrh, two of fresh water, and three of snow-melted water. I want a boy and a girl for every fountain. Pipe for me! Let me have the Lydian pipe, and the Lydian lyre songs, and a Phrygian reed, and oxhide drums beating. I desire to sing these things as long as I live; and when I die, place a pipe over my head, and a lyre at my feet. Pipe for me!
