Frau Amme, Frau Amme, das Kind ist erwacht! Doch die liegt ruhig im Schlafe. Vöglein zwitschern, die Sonne lacht, Am Hügel weiden die Schafe. Frau Amme, Frau Amme, das Kind steht auf, Es wagt sich weiter und weiter! Hinab zum Brunnen nimmt es den Lauf, Da stehen Blumen und Kräuter. Frau Amme, Frau Amme, der Brunnen ist tief! Sie schläft, als läge sie drinnen. Das Kind lief schnell, wie es noch nie lief, Die Blumen locken's von hinnen. Nun steht es am Brunnen, nun ist es am Ziel, Nun pflückt es die Blumen munter, Doch bald ermüdet das reizende Spiel, Da schaut's in die Tiefe hinunter. Und unten erblickt es ein holdes Gesicht Mit Augen so hell und so süße; Es ist sein eigenes, das weiß es noch nicht, Viel stumme, freundliche Grüße! Das Kindlein winkt, der Schatten geschwind Winkt aus der Tiefe ihm wieder. Herauf, herauf! So meint es das Kind, Der Schatten: hernieder, hernieder! Schon beugt es sich über den Brunnenrand. Frau Amme, du schläfst noch immer! Da fallen die Blumen ihm aus der Hand Und trüben den lockenden Schimmer. Verschwunden ist sie die süße Gestalt, Verschluckt von der hüpfenden Welle, Das Kind durchschauert's fremd und kalt, Und schnell enteilt es der Stelle.

Dida, dida, en nen s’ha despertat! Però ella dorm tranquil•lament. Els ocells refilen, el sol somriu, al tossal pasturen les ovelles. Dida, dida, el nen s’ha llevat, s’arrisca cada cop més lluny! Baixa corrents vers el pou, allà on creixen herbes i flors. Dida, dida, el pou és profund! Ella dorm com si estigués allà dins. El nen corre de pressa, com mai havia corregut, allà lluny, l’atrauen les flors. Ara és a costat del pou, al seu objectiu, i alegre, està collint flors, però aviat es cansa de l’atraient joc, i esguarda vers el fons del pou. I allà baix veu un rostre encisador, amb uns ulls tan clars i tan dolços; és el seu propi rostre, però ell encara no ho sap, que mut, el saluda amicalment! El nen fa un senyal i de seguida l’ombra des del fons li respon al senyal. Cap amunt, cap amunt! Això s’imagina l’infant, i l’ombra: cap avall, cap avall! L’infant ja s’aboca a la vora del pou. Dida, tu dorms encara! Aleshores de la mà li cauen les flors i enterboleixen l’atraient reflex. S’ha esvanit la dolça figura, engolida pel clapoteig de l’ona, l’infant sent una estranya i freda esgarrifança i fuig corrents del lloc.
