Din Mund er stum og tungt dit Fjed, Hvor er dit Hjertets Fred?“ O, Moder! jeg er syg og træt, Jeg veed ei selv hvoraf; Kom, lad os gaae jeg længes ret At see det friske Hav. Naar Aftenvinden blæser op Og kruser Bølgens hvide Top, Naar Sol bag Skyen synker ned, Saa faaer mit Hjerte Fred. Nei, Moder, jeg vil bort igjen! Hver Bølge har en Røst, Der hvisker som en troløs Ven Og smerter i mit Bryst. Lad os gaae ind bag Skovens Træer, Naar Løvet sagte skjælver der, Og Stjernen skinner stille ned, Saa faaer mit Hjerte Fred. Nei, Moder! vel er Skoven smuk, Og mild er Stjernens Glands, Men Vinden lyder som et Suk, Og Sukket ligner hans. Erloschen ist der Blick so rein; wo blieb der Friede dein?” „Ach Mutter, krank bin ich und müd', nicht weiß ich selbst, woher. Komm, lass uns geh'n! Gewaltig zieht mich's hin zum weiten Meer. Wenn Abendwinde kühler weh'n, wenn kräuselnd sich die Wellen dreh'n und sanft verglüht der Abendschein, dann kehrt der Friede mein. Nein, Mutter, lass uns flieh'n geschwind, denn jede Welle spricht, wie Lieb' und Treu' nur gleicht dem Wind, und, ach, mein Herze bricht! O folge mir zum dunkeln Wald! Wenn dort das Laub erzitternd hallt, vom Himmel seh'n die Sterne klein, dann kehrt der Friede mein. O Mutter, fort aus Waldespracht! Der Sterne Glanz erbleicht. Hörst du den Seufzer durch die Nacht, der, ach, dem seinen gleicht? Komm, lass uns geh'n! Mein Auge glüht, lass schlafen mich, ich bin so müd'; schlaf' ich an deinem Herzen ein, dann kehrt der Friede mein. Nein, Mutter! Küss' ich dir den Mund, hör' deines Herzens Schlag, so muss ich denken jener Stund', da ich an seinem lag. Wohin mein Fuß auf Erden eilt, sein Bild in meinem Herzen weilt. O sage mir, lieb' Mütterlein, wenn kehrt der Friede mein?” „Da oben klagt der Welle Mund, die Töne schaurig zieh'n; tief unten auf dem Meeresgrund die stummen Blumen blüh'n.
