Bonne humeur
Language: French (Français)
Nous marchions sous la fine pluie;
Le ciel était couleur de suie,
Le vent soufflait;
Le bois semblait toucher la nue
Et sa carcasse maigre et nue
De froid tremblait.
Affrontant gaîment la tempête,
Hâtant le pas, baissant la tête,
Ninon chantait;
Et parfois, sur notre passage,
Un oiseau, dans son clair langage,
Lui répondait.
L'air piquant animait sa joue;
Tout en clapotant dans la boue
Elle sourit.
En dépit de l'hiver morose,
Nous gardons au coeur une rose
Qui refleurit.

In a good mood
Language: English  after the French (Français)
We were walking in a fine rain
under a soot-coloured sky.
The wind blew.
The wood seemed to touch the clouds,
and its thin, naked carcass
trembled with cold.
Gaily we faced the storm.
Hurrying, head down,
Ninon sang,
and sometimes along our way
a bird answered her
in its clear language.
Rosy-cheeked from the fresh air,
she smiled as she splashed
in the mud.
Despite the somber winter,
our hearts hold a rose
that flowers again.
