Die Schwalbe klopft an's [Fensterlein]1:

Gar frohe Botschaft bring' ich dir  -- 
Der Frühling wartet vor der Thür;

Das Mägdlein öffnet schnell das Thor,
Schneeglöckchen sprossen rings hervor,
Und durch die blaue Frühlingsluft
Weht leiser, linder Veilchenduft:   
"Gott grüße dich, du holde Maid
s' ist Frühlingszeit!"

Da klopft die Lieb' an's Herze fein: 
"Mach' auf, mach' auf, laß mich hinein!
Schon lange wart' ich vor der Thür,
Und bring' ein grünes Kränzlein dir,
Laß mich hinein, du holde Maid
s' ist Frühlingszeit!" 

Das Mägdlein tritt erschreckt zurück,
Und wehrt mit Wort, und wehrt mit Blick;  
Da tritt die Lieb' zum Busch hinaus,
Und reicht ihm einen Veilchenstrauß:
"Gott grüße dich, du holde Maid
s' ist Frühlingszeit!"

Da wird's dem Mägdlein bang um's Herz, 
Es weiß nicht  --  ist es Wonne  -- Schmerz;  
Von Thränen glänzt sein heit'rer Blick,
Es tritt nicht vor  --  weicht nicht zurück 
Und plötzlich ruft's voll Seligkeit:   
" s' ist Frühlingszeit!"
