Über die Welt kommt Stille, Das Dunkel wiegt sie ein. Geschähe mir mein Wille, Stille, ach, stille, Wie gerne wollt' ich sein! Je stiller die Vögel schweigen, Je lauter schreit mein Herz. Sanft geht der Sterne Reigen, Ach, und sie neigen Sich fremd herab zu meinem Schmerz. Schlagt auf, ihr Sternenflammen! Im Dunkeln seh' ich so klar Seine Augen, die mich verdammen, Ach, und zusammen Bricht Alles, was mein Leben war!
