Wann, o Schicksal, wann wird endlich Mir mein letzter Wunsch gewährt? Nur ein Hüttchen, still und ländlich, Nur ein kleiner, eigner Herd. Und ein Freund, bewährt und weise, Freiheit, Heiterkeit und Ruh. Ach! und sie!, das seufz' ich leise, Zur Gefährtin sie dazu. Wenn ich noch ein Gärtchen hätte, Bauten wir's mit eig'ner Hand, Statt geschorener Boskette Und der Hagenbuchenwand Dämmert uns ein Dach von Latten, Dicht mit Rebengrün bedeckt, Tief im Silbertannenschatten Vor des Neides Blick versteckt. Statt Kanäl' und Gartenteiche Nur ein Röhrenbrunnentrog. Statt Alleen und Taxussträuche Früchte, die ich selbst erzog. Durch ein Gatter, nur von Pfählen, Durch den Vorhof, eng und klein, Eilt ich, statt nach Marmorsälen, In ihr trautes Kämmerlein. Bei des heitern Morgens Frische Hörten wir im Buchenhain Dort am Wasser im Gebüsche Nachtigallenmelodein. Auch begänne sie Gesänge, Wäre Philomel' entflohn, Und in meine Seele dränge Tiefer noch ihr süßer Ton. Unterm Strauch voll Hagerosen, Auf dem rotbeblümten Klee Könnten wir so traulich kosen, Wie auf seid'nem Kanapee. In dem Duft entblühter Bohnen Unter Pappeln, hoch und schlank, Bauten wir, trotz gold'nen Thronen Eine kleine Bretterbank. Beeren, die ihr Finger drückte, Honig, der der Wab' entfloß, Kräuter, die vom Beet' sie pflückte, Milch, die sie in Schalen goß: Ha! bei solchem Göttermahle Säßen wir, wie froh, wie stolz! Wär' auch Löffel, Kelch und Schale, Nur aus weißem Buchenholz. Mit den holden Dörferinnen, Nach der Weidenpfeife Schall, Einen Maientanz beginnen, Gält' uns mehr als Maskenball. Lieber, als der Prunk der Bühnen Dem verwöhnten Städterschwarm, Wär' ein Pfänderspiel im Grünen Mir an meines Mädchens Arm. In gestirnten Sommernächten, Wenn der Mond die Schatten hellt, Wallte sie an meiner Rechten, Durch das thaubeträufte Feld. Oft zum mildern Abendsterne Hüb' ich den entzückten Blick; Öfter senkt' ich ihn, wie gerne! Auf ihr blaues Aug' zurürck. Vieles wünscht' ich sonst vergebens! Jetzo nur zum letztenmal, Für den Abend meines Lebens, Irgendwo ein Friedensthal, Edle Muß' in eigner Wohnung, Und ein Weib voll Zärtlichkeit, Das, der Treue zur Belohnung, Auf mein Grab ein Veilchen streut.
